Worried about the start-up costs of cloth nappying? Here is a cheapish solution to get you going.

A cheap way to go would be to use boosted prefolds and PUL covers. You would need to buy them online.

Babybeehinds currently have a special for PUL covers at $10.35 each which is very cheap and they are really good covers. The cheapest large prefolds are either $29.90 for a 6 pack from the Weewuns or $4.80 each from Darlings Downunder.

I boost mine with microfibre cleaning cloths that you get in the car cleaning aisle at Woolies - 3 for $4.99. Then I use microfleece liners that I wash or flushable ones to use when I am out.

This is how I use my prefolds - I keep them set up like a disposable/MCN so that they are ready to use. I have one cover per nappy but other people use less covers.

Download instructions - right click and ’save as’

If you wanted to start with a cheap part-time system then you could buy a 6 pack of prefolds, 2 packets of car cloths (use the spare ones for the house!), 3-6 covers (depending on whether you want to wash them after every use or air them - I wash mine as dd is a heavy wetter and poos on them too!) and some liners (flushables cost more) = roughly $30 + $10 + $33-$66 + $5 = $78 to $111. That makes it between $13 and $18.50 per nappy.

Infant sized prefolds are cheaper too.

You would need to wash every day but prefolds & PUL covers dry really quickly as do covers. I give my nappies a prerinse by themselves and then add the rest of the washing.

My husband set up this “poo squirter” so that we could easily get rid of solids from our MCN. He used a high pressure shower hose, some garden connectors (female to female) and a garden trigger. The hose is attached to the hot water tap that supplies the washing machine. We only wash in cold water so this tap was not in use.

To use the squirter you do need to turn on the hot water tap and turn it off when you are finished but this takes only a few seconds.
